Super Mario 64 begins with a letter from Princess Peach inviting Mario to her castle to have a cake she has baked for him. Upon arrival, Mario discovers that Bowser has invaded the castle, imprisoning the princess and her servants, and hiding the castle's protective Power Stars in various worlds inside magical paintings. Players collect Power Stars to unlock enough of Princess Peach's castle, reach Bowser's location, and rescue Princess Peach.
Super Mario 64 is a platformer that combines 3D elements, where players control Mario through various courses. Mario's abilities are much more diverse than in previous games. He can walk, run, jump, crouch, crawl, climb, swim, kick, grab objects, and punch using the analog stick and the buttons on the game controller. The character can perform special jumps by combining a regular jump with other actions, including double jumps and triple jumps, long jumps, backflips, and wall jumps.
Additionally, Super Mario 64 includes several notable improvements. Unlike its predecessors, Super Mario 64 uses a health point system, represented by an eight-segment pie chart. If Mario is injured, he can replenish his health by collecting three types of coins - yellow; red worth two yellow coins; and blue, equivalent to five yellow coins - or by passing through a spinning heart. Furthermore, an underwater breath-holding element for Super Mario the plumber has also been added.
